Depending on where you live, the question of where to shoot might have you choosing from a multitude of options or searching for even a single location. Those who live in a rural area might be able to walk out their backdoor and shoot any gun they own, while urban shooters typically have limited shooting locations available to them.
It is important no matter where you live to be familiar with the local laws. Typically, firearms cannot be fired within town limits and there may be requirements on signage and structures anywhere firearms are shot.
If you do not know shooting locations or would like to find more, a good resource is WhereToShoot.org. It allows you to search by state or zip code to find a list of ranges in your area.
When you do find a location to shoot, it will have a set of rules. You should take the time to review and understand the rules. The most common shooting locations include:
Private Property
The most flexible location to shoot is on private property if it is allowed by local laws and regulations. You must always have the property owner’s permission to shoot on their land. When shooting on private property, make sure you follow gun safety rules. Make sure you have an appropriate backstop when you shoot because bullets even from a small .22 caliber pistol can travel up to a mile and you are responsible for every bullet you fire.
Range
Shooting ranges can provide a great opportunity to shoot for the new shooter. Many ranges have attached gun shops that can provide the equipment a new shooter needs. In addition, a lot of ranges rent gun for use on the range. Renting is a great way to try out a number of different guns to find the make and model that works best for each shooter. Ranges can be both indoor and outdoor. Indoor ranges are generally privately run, while outdoor ranges can be private or public.
Gun Clubs
Gun clubs are private membership based organizations supported by dues and fees which provide one of more ranges for the use of the members. Pistol, rifle and shotgun ranges are common. Clubs provide competitive, educational and social events. Gun clubs are nice because they provide not just shooting facilities but also a community of shooters. For people who shoot regularly, they can also be significantly cheaper than paying range fees every time you shoot.
Find your shooting location and enjoy shooting your shooting experience. Remember, you can always shoot at more than one location.
